Shelter honors volunteers
WALNUT CREEK – Cats-N-Us Director Mary Marshall recently honored the organization’s volunteers at a luncheon at Rebecca’s Tea House at Walnut Creek.
Marshall congratulated cat shelter founder Ruth Lane on her 90th birthday and announced plans for the Ruth Lane Spay/Neuter Program to assist low-income cat owners in altering their pets.
“I wanted to honor our volunteers who put in many hours each week,” said Marshall. “No one puts in less than 15 to 20 hours a week.”
Honored were Jim and Marilyn Beam, Jack and Peggy Billow, Marty Briem, Karen Brinkman, Kathy
Bollon, Christy Boron, Connie Burger, Marty Engel, Diane Ervin, Andrea Fanti, Shondell
Fotheringham, Debbie Gerber, Thelma Huff, Amy Kutcher, Ruth Lane, Diana Low, Ellen
Matics, Dorothy Myers, B.J. Parrish, Jan Pullins, Jennifer Troyer and Ann Walters.
New volunteers always are welcome at the Cats-N-Us cat shelter, located at 829 Union Ave. in Dover.
“We have a real cat problem in the county,” said Marshall. She urged every cat owner to have her pet spayed or neutered.

Low-income individuals who wish to learn more about the new Ruth Lane Spay/Neuter program can leave a message at the shelter by calling (330) 602-6762.
Neutered male or spayed female cats are available at the shelter for a $40 adoption fee, with a second neutered male cat free. Kittens are $15, but must be spayed or neutered at 6 months of age.
This year Cats-N-Us will have some toys, including red and white catnip mice, available for a donation at most area veterinarian offices and at the shelter. A catnip stocking and a toy in a gift bag are available for $4.
Donations to the shelter always are appreciated, according to Marshall. Paper towels are the biggest need. Other supplies needed are cloth towels, washcloths and blankets, laundry softener sheets, dish soap, bleach and liquid hand soap. Checks can be mailed to Cats-N-Us, Box 832, New Philadelphia 44663.
Many people and groups, including the Dover Eagles Auxiliary, have contributed to the Cats-N-Us Shelter. Haley Troyer, 13, and Emily
Aleshire, 11, both of Walnut Creek, put up a lemonade stand over the summer and donated their profits.
The organization also received a grant from the Reeves Foundation for heating and air conditioning equipment and stainless steel sinks.
The shelter is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7, and Sundays from 3 to 6. To see the cats and kittens available or for more information, visit www.catsnus.org
