"My Story" by Tomikin kitten as to Ruth Lane

It was so dark and I was so cold, and wet, and confused.   I tried to lick the rain from my fur but it was little hard, sharp drops instead of raindrops...one even cut my tongue.  I did not understand that.  And I didn't understand when I tried to cross the street and the water there was hard too.  I could not walk on it.  A car was coming; I was trying so hard, I kept slipping on the hard water, and almost got killed.

When I got to the other side of the street I was so scared that I could not stand up.  I huddled down into a ball trying to get warm and stop shaking.  Then I heard a gentle voice and felt a soft caress and a person picked me up and held me close in his arms and said.  "You poor little thing.  You shouldn't be out in this weather.  I know a place for you where you will be warm, dry and you will be cared for and loved.  I wish I could keep you myself, but I don't have a home either."

He carried me to a building and took me inside where another person took me and held me, then put me into a space where there was a bed, a bathroom, a bowl of fresh water that wasn't hard and a bowl of food.  The food smelled so good.  I suddenly realized I was really so very hungry.  I could hardly wait to eat.

I ate as much as I could possibly home.  (Mom would have scolded me if she could have seen me).  I curled up in my bed and slept and slept.  I was so warm and cozy.  When I woke up and looked around, I saw other kittens in their homes.  They told me I was in a "shelter".  I didn't know what that was but thought maybe it was another word for Heaven.

My first day at the shelter was full of new experiences.  I was given some medicine (yuk) for worms.  I wonder why they give medicine to worms??.  They examined me for fleas. I could have told them that my mom never let me play with other kittens who might have fleas.  Then, later, I got my first shot.  Well, the hard raindrops hurt more.

I lived, played, slept, ate, grew and thrived for a short period of time.  I also learned I wasn't going to stay at the shelter all the rest of my life.   Someday someone will visit us and choose a kitten to take home with them to love and care for forever and someday it will be my turn.  In can hardly wait.  Maybe you will be the one that I can love and trust forever.
