Lucky Black Cat

submitted by Richard Hanchette

This is a real life story about a little black cat named Ebony. My wife's uncle had several cats that he rescued. When he passed on, we were lucky enough to get 2 of them: Ebony and Julio.

At the same time I am currently a kidney dialysis patient. I obtain my dialysis via a perma-cath, located in and on my chest. All of my blood is removed from my body and cleaned in a dialysis, or artificial kidney machine. The blood remains contained in the machine.

The other night, as we slept, this perman-cath somehow tore away from my chest and fell on the bed. I began bleeding quite severely. We were asleep and were not aware of this. I had already lost enough blood to be light headed.

Still asleep, I was awakened by the feel of a warm, wet nose nudging at me.  It was Ebony. It was unusual for her to jump on the bed and do this at night. However, she knew something was wrong. She kept nudging at me and my face till I (and then my wife) woke up and was able to call 911.  At first, I thought the wet on the bed was a hairball, but when I realized how much blood was on the bed and how much I had lost, It is a fact, this little cat truly saved my life. I share this with you. Ebony and Julio are both enjoying life in Scio, Ohio.
